Cdr. Luehman Is New VW-1 Skipper

Hawaii's "picket plane" squadron, Airborne Early Warning Squadron One, welcomed a new skipper last week. Commander Earl A Luehmann vw-1_1st_change_of_command.jpgbecame VW-1's commanding officer in a Wedensday afternoon change-of-command ceremony. He relieves Commander F.P. Anderson who has headed the unit since its commissioning in June 1952.

VW-1 "the eyes and ears of the Hawaiian area," was commissioned at Barber's Point thirteen months ago and utilizes PB1-W's equipped with electronic warning devices.

Cdr. Luehman, new commanding officer, has been executive officer of the squadron since October, 1952, when he reported from his last duty as Associate Professor of Naval Science at Iowa State College at Ames Iowa.

A 1941 Naval Academy graduate, he reported to the light cruiser Helena and saw action in the Pacific theatre during 1941 - 1942. He received his wings in September, 1943, and left for Pensacola and duty as instructor with the Operational Training Command at Jacksonville, Fla.

In January, 1946 Cdr. Luehman reported to the Chief of Naval Operations where he took duties as field representative in the establishment of the Naval Air Reserve Program. Transferred from CNO in 1947, he attended Officer's Electronics School, Memphis, Tenn., and served with ComAirPac, San Diego.

Cdr. Anderson will be staff plans officer with ComFair Hawaii at Naval Air Station Pearl Harbor. In 1948 he was with VP-51, San Diego, the original Airborne Early Warning Squadron.

The departing C.O. congratulated VW-1's 350 officers and men for "successful participation of their detachment with the fleet in the western Pacific," and for "high squadron efficiency and morale."

The post of executive officer falls to Lt. Cdr. Marcus P. Horn, who recently reported to the squadron from duty with Chief of Naval Intelligence, Washington, D.C.
