The PB-1W1 is a modified B-17G. Modifications include the removal of all armament and armor; installation of the General Electric AN/APS-20 radar with its antenna in a large bulbous radome mounted under the fuselage covering the sealed bomb bay doors (BuNo 77234 had the radome mounted on the upper forward fuselage); advanced IFF; relay-radar transmitter and antenna; and advanced radio equipment so the aircraft could communicate with both the ship borne CICs and other aircraft. Four 270 gallon fuel tanks were also installed, two in each outer wing section.
Twenty two PB-1W1 were operational in the naval aircraft inventory. Thirteen of these were assigned to VW-1 at one time or another between 1950 when the initial cadre of the squadron was formed, and February 1955, when the last PB-1W1 was transferred out, all having been replaced by the Lockheed WV-2 Warning Star.
The Navy planned for 20 PB-1Ws1 and Bureau Numbers (BuNos) 77225-77244 were established for these aircraft.
In May 1945, the Navy received one B-17G from Douglas Aircraft2, via the US Army Air Force (USAAF). The aircraft was given BuNo 34114, modified to XPB-1W1 configuration, and assigned to a Special Project Unit at NAS Squantum,15 MA for use in electronics development projects. The BuNo came from a block of numbers originally established for some Boeing N2S-4 Stearman Kaydets which were not all received.
In July 1945, 20 B-17Gs, fresh from the Douglas Aircraft2 factory, were received by the USAAF and turned over (without any exchange of funds) to the Navy. In deference perhaps to the USAAF method of model designation which indicated the basic mission (B), design number (17), and design series (G) [but not the manufacturer], and the universal recognition of the aircraft as the Boeing Flying Fortress; the Navy assigned the model designation PB-1W, indicating the first model of a Patrol aircraft built by Boeing in Warning (radar) configuration.
Over an extended period of time 19 of these aircraft were modified to PB-1W1 configuration at the Naval Aircraft Modification Unit (NAMU16) at NAS Johnsville, PA. The twentieth (BuNo 77241) was never modified. It remained a PB-1, and was used for pilot training, cargo, and logistic operations. Ultimately it was used as a test bed in the development of the APS-35 radar.
After its special project assignment was completed, BuNo 34114 was overhauled and modified into standard PB-1W1 configuration to become the twentieth operational PB-1W.
In 1948 NADS16 converted two US Air Force B-17Gs into early warning radar configuration. They were designated EB-17Gs and used in a series of tests at Wright Field, OH to determine the capabilities of early warning radar. The tests were completed in 1950 and the aircraft transferred to the Navy. They were assigned BuNos 77137 and 77138, originally reserved for some Consolidated PB4Y-2 Privateers. After overhaul and redesignation, they became the "newest" and final 2 of the 22 aircraft PB-1W1 fleet. Both of these aircraft had been manufactured and delivered to the USAAF in 1945. BuNo 77137 was manufactured by Douglas Aircraft2.BuNo 77138 was manufactured by Lockheed-Vega Aircraft,19 and hence became the only Vega built PB-1W1 in the fleet.
The following pages list, by BuNo and manufacturers construction number (c/n), the 22 PB-1Ws of the Navy, the period of their service, their service before and after the VW-1 tour, and ultimate disposition, fate, or location today.
LEGEND The example shown below indicates that a/c buno X8 was converted or overhauled in October 19X2 and assigned to VW-1 until February 19X5 when it was transferred to Litchfield Park. |

FOOT NOTES:
a Project Cadillac II included 9 of MIT-RL's 11 laboratories, BuAer, BuShips, Naval Air Modification Center, Philadelphia, Naval Research Lab, several Navy contractors and Radiation Lab subcontractors. The project was eventually given the code name of Cadillac, the name of the highest mountain in Maine and site of some of the developmental relay work."b AN/APS-20 search radar. Used in PB-1W1 and other aircraft. S-Band (2880 MHz +/-30 MHz) search radar. Developed with Project Cadillac II and manufactured by Hazeltine and General Electric. 1 Megawatt peak power output for A and C models. 80 - 100 mile range. Later development for the AN/APS-20 carried the B and E version it was 2.5 Megawatts peak power output. Range up to 250 nm for the E version. The AN/APS-20B/E was used in the WV-2's (EC-121), the transmit pulse repetition frequency was set at 270 pps which allowed search ranges greater than 250 nm.
Other aircraft that used at least one of the AN/APS-20 variants were TBM-3W, WV-2(EC-121), ZPG-2W(EZ-1), AD-5W, AF-2W, HR2S-1W, P-2, WB-29, RC-121C, Fairey Gannet and Avro Shackleton.
cThe radar antenna and dome relocation was done in an attempt to improve the capability of detection and tracking of aircraft targets and to reduce the effects of "sea return" on the radar receiver.
