Occasionally questions are asked about the various VW-1 aircraft by BuNo's that are listed on this sites
History of Aircraft assigned to Air Borne Early
Warning Squadron One (VW-1) page.
One aircraft, BuNo 135749, was of particular interest to some of our members who are writing their biographies
for family members. A portion of their biography includes the time they were assigned to VW-1 including the
aircraft and crews they flew with.
The site manager sent out a request to several members, when asked to provide additional information to show
that BuNo 135749 had previously been assigned to VW-1. Don Lanoue responded with photo copies of his flight
logs that were on this aircraft. Each of his flights on 135749 (old TE-6) is high lighted in yellow.
- These 3 pictures show the October, November and December 1957 Flight hours on 135749 Lt(jg) Donald A.

A portion of an e-mail received from Lyle Fisher VW-1 61-63 TE-2 (VQ-1 '67-'70 and '74-'77)
" ...The first item that I wanted to share with you is the WV2 that was received by VW-1 on 17 December 1954
and assigned tail number of TE-6 buno 135749 is the same aircraft that was later modified by the Martin company
and assigned to VQ-1 as PR-21 ( I also did two tours in VQ-1). This is the same aircraft that was shotdown by
the North Koreans on 15 April 1969. I saw PR-21's departure that April morning. I had never known that 135749
was a previous VW-1 aircraft!..."
The history of 135749 as found on our site follows:
BuNo 135749 c/n 4316 WV-2 BuNo 135749 manufactured Sep 54 first assigned to VW-1 at Barbers Point. Transferred
to storage at Litchfield Park in 1958. Withdrawn from storage and converted to a WV-2Q in 1959 and delivered to
VQ-1 in 1960. On a reconnaissance flight from Atsugi on 15 Apr 1969 the plane was shot down by North Korean
fighter aircraft and crashed into the Sea of Japan with the loss of all 31 crewmen on board, total airframe
hours 10,980.

A brief explaination by Dave about the flight codes in his log book.
Summary sheet compiling Dave's VW-1 flight hours by aircraft. Log book shows 538.0 hours brought forward from
AEWBARRONPAC.
Attached are pages from my Flight Log Book. On the right hand side of my Flight Log Book I had entered data not
on the 'Enlisted flight logs'. Under catapult column I had listed T, A, or W (Transit, AEW, Weather).
On some of the later flights in 1966, the flight codes were entered. While I had entered T (Transit) some of
the codes used were 2Q1 and 3Q1. While we were transiting from one site to another the crew was also performing
Aerological duties.
The next column I entered which "crew" I was serving with at the time. I had flown with crews 1, 4, 5, and 7 at
various times.
Under remarks, I entered the bases we had taken off from and landing at.
