- 1st. picture from the left: Two home town men who grew up together meet in
Okinawa.
Harvey Starr ADR-3 USN & flight mech on VW-1's TE-2 on the left met up with Doug Knapp USAF, pictured
in the middle. Doug, who was stationed at Kadena AB noticed Harvey's name on a flight log several days
prior to Harvey's arrival and surprized his old friend upon his arrival. Harvey stated, "We had a very nice
time enjoying the liberty spots on Okinawa".
The guy on the right blowing smoke was on Berl Welch's crew he was a first class and was a Flight Engineer
or in training for Flight Engineer, I think his first name was Dick.

3rd. picture from the left: Fred Standish with his radio controlled model and his truck.
There was a shipmate named Tony with us at the time that was my instructor pilot. The plane was a Goldberg
Senion Falcon. A 60 size engine. The radio was a 27 MHZ Heathkit 4 channel that I got in kit form. There
was an abandoned 10,000 ft. runway on Anderson AFB that we flew on. I got about 20 to 25 flights on it.
Took it home with me after leaving Guam. My dad was interested in it so I attempted to teach him to fly. I
wasn't able to get the controls back in time when he got in trouble. It was totaled. A great plane, the
perfect starter plane. Tricycle gear, 60 size, and good dihedral.

- 1st. picture from the left: A couple of squadron "ground pounders" built this boat down at the Nav Sta
hobby shop, I can't remember their names but maybe somebody from the 70-71 period might remember them. Anyway
it took them about 6 months and then they brought it up to the boat ramp at Agana and had the big launching.
It carried 5 or 6 people easily, very nice boat.

2nd. picture from the left: I am George Beegle. I was in VW-1 from fall of 1969 to fall of 1971. Below is
information on the pictures and the two people in the boat.
The wooden boat "Cavite Miss" was built by George Beegle and Winfield Nagle. George is
driving and Winfield is on the bow in both pictures. At some point during their first few days at VW-1 and
in front of George, Winfield said that he is going to build a boat and take it to Rota, the island north of
Guam. George said that he would do that with him. It took 1.5 years to build the boat. George came up with
the name Cavite Miss. They took the boat to Rota on a very rough day and came back on a fairly calm day.
George and Winfield used the boat for scuba diving and spear fishing for their remaining 6 months on
Guam..

- After 40+ years I don't remember the names of the AT's, Flight Engineers or other crew members but perhaps someone
in the association will be able to identify one or more.
