- 1st. picture from left: Typhoon Mary as seen on EC-121 camera scope. The 50 nautical mile range markers
(rings) show that the aircraft is approximately 100 miles SSE of the eye, the aircraft is heading about 225 deg
(bright flash) from North (top of scope). VW-1 reported surface winds of 90kts during this fix. About 36 hours
after this photo was taken typhoon Mary passed over the northern portion of Taiwan, one day later it dissipated
as it hit the Chinese main land.

2nd. picture from left: Here is the "Captain's Gig" rendering painted on a metal 'plate' that was attached to
one nose wheel door of TE 1. Although the drawing is titled "Captain's Gig", it is easy to see why TE 1 was
also called "The Showboat". As I recall, the drawing used red and blue paint on a white background. This pic
was taken in '62. I do not know what year the name and drawing originated, or the artist, but the plate was
still on her when I departed 1/64.

3rd. picture from left: Pictures of women were mama-sans who did laundry and cleaning in the barracks at Det
"C" Danang and was taken summer of 1970, I remember the older one we called Granny and she would wear your
jockey shorts. Youngest one I think was called Sam, and the other one I think was called Fawn but not sure
about that. Picture was taken inside VW-1 Det "C" barracks in laundry area.

2nd. picture from left: Picture is of me Harvey Starr ADR-3 flight mech TE-2 standing on the wing of a WW-II
Japanese aircraft either on Yap or Truk circa 1970.
We had made a flight with TE-00 to deliver some required supplies either to the native people or the US Coast
Guard, which had LORAN stations on these islands.
The things I do remember about one of those islands was the runway was rough and it put nicks in the leading
edge of the props and we used the shank of a large screwdriver to smooth them over. The other thing I remember
was there was no ground crew available at the time of our take off so I stayed on the ground to move the stairs
out of the way and pull the chocks and then had to climb a rope to get into the aircraft.
On one of those islands not far from the runway there was a group of WW-2 aircraft that were parked in a row
just the way they were left at the end of the war.

- I think it was late 1968, Crew 7 was asked to take TE-3
up to Saipan for a "good will" show for school kids.
We rigged a tall ladder to the front door and the the kids climbed the
ladder then worked their way back to the rear door and exited.
Several of the crew were at various work stations and talked to the kids about what
they did when tracking Typhoons.
One shot shows some kids looking out a window. The building was
an old bunker from WWII built, originally, by the Japanesee. The school used
it in 1968 as a classroom, I believe.
