- Picture on the left: A member of VW-1's line crew or the plane captain pulling the chocks from TE-11 as she
gets ready to depart on a mission. I figured it'd be good to have a photo of the young kid down there with the
props turning, etc. He'd just finished being fireguard, during engine start-up there was always a lot of smoke
and sometimes a burst of flame from the exhaust pipes. Seems like that job always went to the most
junior.
2nd picture from the left:
The plane in the back is TE-11 which was 141331 and 143205 tail. We were out at with two crews and planes at
the time flying storms out of Clark with 12 on and 12 off. The AF crews were down for crew rest so our two
crews were flying all four fixes each day. It really ground us down and almost got unpleasant when we went to
the O'Club for supper before getting some sleep and met one of the AF crews. Someone had good sense and we just
passed by with a nod...never mind how we felt about getting stuck with their work. Oh, the photo was in June 71
just before VQ took us over. Note 141331 (TE-11) and 143205 (TE-12) had the movable center rudder.
The 3rd. & 4th pictures from the left: Photos of the VW-1 ramp lineup - TE 06 of course was the EC-121 that
we used for training to save the instrumentation on the WCs, TE 06 was not configured with a complete set of
weather equipment. The connie numbered 659 belonged to NAS Agana BuNo 131659.

- Picture on the left: The crew in the simulator is part of Crew 12. The Co-pilot's first name was Bill but I
don't recall his last name - he drove a purpleish VW bug that Guam had been harsh on. The engineer at the panel
doing either training or a check is Don Ray. The engineer behind him is instructing/checking and was the
regular 1st engineer on Crew 12.
2nd picture from the left: Paul Tsamtsis and Dave Ganger
The 3rd picture from the left: the photo in the duty office is various aircrew members, but I have no names.
Beards were "in" during 1971. I hope someone will recognize them.

- Picture on the left: Picture from the old VW-1 flight line looking NW towards the quonset huts used as
office buildings, shortly after this picture was taken VW-1 moved to the east side of the runway into the
hanger. Looks like a typical rain shower had just passed, these usually happened a couple times a day.
2nd picture from the left: Paul Overton standing outside one of the VW-1 quonset huts
The 3rd picture from the left: VW-1 flight line (DaNang, or Chu-lai??) as viewed from the escape hatch at the
radioman's position.

The 4th picture from the left: TE-8 on display at airshow at Andersen AFB in 1969.
In a follow up e-mail Douglas Bowles related the following. "Glad that your group can use the photograph. I
remember the photo while I was researching the Naval Aviation career of my wife's Uncle Monte Roy Clark who is
still living. He survived the crash of 16 Checkpool at Midway Island on January 22, 1961."

- Picture on the left: VW-1 operated out of quonset huts on the west side of the runway for almost 10 years.
This picture was taken a few months after the squadron moved into the new hanger on the east side of the
runway.
