INFORMATION FOR PERSONNEL REPORTING ABOARD VW-1 (CONT'D)

14. HOUSING INFORMATION:

There is a housing shortage in Hawaii as on the Mainland. This is especially true of the area in the vicinity of NAS, Barber's Point.

Fleet Air Detachment maintains a Housing Office which handles the assignment of Public quarters on the station, and also of the housing units in Coral Rose manor (better known as title VIII), which is just outside Gate #1. The assignment of housing is made in accordance with your date of arrival in the Hawaiian area. Public quarters consist mostly of full quonset huts with two or three bedrooms. Title VIII housing is privately constructed on Navy property and consists of multiple units built of concrete blocks - - one, two, or three bedroom units.

The average wait for both officers and enlisted men in Title VIII (which is unfurnished except for stove and refrigerator) is four to six months. The Navy will loan furniture, dishes and bedding to these units for ninety days. This is the Title VIII housing only. Base housing generally requires a longer wait, however all base housing units are furnished quarters.

Civilian housing is very critical. The most desirable areas are Ewa Beach, Wahiewa or Nonakuli, because of their proximity to the station. Rent average is $100.00 plus electricity ($10.00 to $15.00) per month, depending on their size and desirability.

Financing has been a problem for "would-be-buyers", however it is understood that some changes have recently been made. A new 3-bedroom house sells for $10,000 to $15,000 with about $3,000 down. Remember construction does not compare with mainland homes.

There are no rental agencies in these areas. Vacancies are found chiefly by house to house canvasing. The Telephone and Electric Company in Wahiawa gladly give any helpful clues as to vacancies.

The Star-Bulletin carries a "for-rent" column, but most of these are in the outlying districts and Waikiki, as are the listings obtained from the Housing desk at the Armed Forces YMCA located in downtown Honolulu.

Your Squadron Housing Officer will gladly give you any additional information. Good Luck!!!!

15. INSPECTIONS:

Inspections will be held at the discretion of the Commanding Officer, and all hands will be notified in the Plan-of-the-Day.

16. LEAVE AND LIBERTY:

All personnel are encouraged to take local recreational leave for a few days at a time. The Commanding Officer may grant up to 15 days leave for officers and up to 30 days for enlisted men. Enlisted personnel may pick up leave requests from the Leading Chief. Officer personnel may pick up forms from the Personnel Office. Not more than 8% of the squadron personnel are allowed to be on leave at any one time, with the exception of emergency leave and Christmas Leave.
