VW-1 Helps Palau Islands

Airborne Early warning Squadron One recently coordinated a GovGuam-Joint Service Program to help the people of Palau. The local agriculture of the Palau Islands was seriously damaged when Typhoon Louise raged through in late last November. The squadron's aim was to help the people of Palau rebuild their food supply by bringing seeds and shoots of vegetables for planting. The shoots were picked for their ability to produce food in a short time.

The squadron contacted the Government of Guam Agricultural Department who agreed to donate 100 pounds of sweet potato and soy bean shoots. They also collected clothes through the U. S. Seventh Fleet's Project Handclasp. When everything was packaged, they asked the Coast Guard, to fly the shipment to the island of Anguar. VW-1's planes are not capable of landing at Palau.

With the completion of this program, the squadron rounded out a three part People to People Program which they began during the Christmas Season.

The first was a 1,000 pound airlift of Christmas gifts to the squadron's foster son and his schoolmates in Soul, Korea. The second consisted of 1,500 pounds of school books to the Philippine Islands for grammar school that was being rebuilt after Typhoons Kate and Louise destroyed it.

VW-1 has been active in its support of Guam and the Trust Territories since its arrival on the island in 1957.
