The 2005 Myrtle Beach reunion was just like all the other reunions, a great success. However there was good news and bad news for the scheduled golf tournament.

First the bad news. It rained all day Thursday, May 5th the day of the scheduled tournament, so the event had to be canceled.

The good news was that most of the golfers played practice rounds Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The format for Monday and Wednesday rounds was a $1.00 Nassau. Each player chipped in $3.00, $1.00 was awarded the player who shot the lowest score for the front 9, back 9 and total score. Ralph Link walked away with 5 of the possible 6 winnings, Pete Wasmund won on Wednesdays front 9. Each player donated his winnings to the VW-1 All Hands Alumni Association's general fund.

Several of the golfers had planned on staying an extra day after the official closing of the reunion for more golf but the rains continued into Friday as well.

The courses played were the Belle Terre and Heron Point golf clubs. Each course severely tested the golfing skills of our members. Scores ranged from 93 to 127, but we won't embarrass individuals by posting their scores. Most fell victim to the deep roughs, sand traps and of course the water. Several of us played the 200 yard long sand traps all along one side of some fairways. All played the 19th hole very well.

Even though none of us shot what we would have had we golfed on our home courses, the time spent together with old shipmates will be remembered for a long time and we look forward to the next golf tournament in San Diego.
